Great post, Marian, and I've done my share of people watching too while displaying books at various events. Every once in awhile, someone comes along with an amazing story to tell. More than anything, the big agents are the gatekeepers to big publishing, both allowing in a few new voices but mostly weeding out the man. If you are a new agent, you have no access to the big publishers, and if you are a new author, you have little access to the big agents. It's always been a symbiotic relationship, and unfortunately, if one wants access to the big publishers, one has to deal with whole mess. Luckily, there are other options, since many small publishers don't require agents.

Thanks, Gwynneth. I think you'll find their stories both enlightening and disheartening, as they've struggled to accept that the old ways of earning a living with publishing are no longer there. Happily, all seem to be happy to have chosen self-publishing.

Oh, Pat, I am so sorry for your loss! Thank you for sharing your heart through your words. Nothing ever takes the pain away, but feeling it reminds us that our loved ones are still freshly with us and freshly gone. We never want to "get over" our love.

This is wonderful! I had no idea print was still here in a big way! I am collablrating with two other writers this year on a print book and I am so excited to know that we have a chance ! My other book was a jewelry design book...those can go either way but to my eye I really can see the beauty of the jewelry better in print! Thank you Marian! jean
